Ex-SP Babul paid hitmen 3 Lac to kill Wife Mitu: Witness

Former superintendent of police (SP) Babul Akter gave Tk3 lac to the killers who took part in the killing of his wife, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, according to the testimony of a witness in court.

Mukhlesur Rahman, an employee of Babul's friend Saiful Islam, gave his testimony in the court of the Third Additional Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Jasim Uddin on Tuesday.

He worked as an executive officer in a company named Multier Print and Packaging opposite the RAB office in Bosila, Mohammadpur, Dhaka. Saiful Islam is the managing director (MD) of the company.

According to court sources, Mokhlesur said two days after the Mitu murder, Saiful asked him to go to the office at around 3pm. He went to the office in Bosila and received Tk3 lakh from the accountant, Mamun.

“I asked Saiful Sir over the phone about the money and asked him what to do with it. The next day at around 5:30pm, MD Sir (Saiful) called me again and gave me the number of Abdullah Al Mamun (relative of the missing accused Kamrul Shikdar Musa). 

“Earlier, two Grameenphone mobile numbers were given with the names of Anwar and Wasim along with money. I was instructed to send the money to those two Bkash numbers.”

Abdur Rashid, public counsel at the court, said Babul sent Tk3 lac to his source Musa through his relative to kill his wife. Saiful's employee detailed it in the court deposition. 

Earlier, the defence lawyers completed the cross-examination of the witness Sarwar Alam on Monday.

On June 5, 2016, Mitu was stabbed and shot dead when she was walking her son to his school bus stop at Chittagong's GEC intersection.

Following the murder, Babul Akter, a police superintendent at the time, filed a case in 2016. 

The PBI concluded that it had information pointing to Babul's involvement in the murder when it delivered its final report on the investigation in May 2021. Mosharraf Hossain, Mitu's father, later filed a murder case against Babul.

On April 9, Mitu's father Musharraf testified in the opening of the trial for seven accused, including Babul.

Wasim, Anwar, Ehteshamul Haque Bhola, Shahjahan Mia, Musa and Khairul are the other suspects who were indicted.
