141 Bangladeshis who went to do the hajj in Saudi Arabia this year have died.

Matiur Rahman, a man, passed away on Saturday.

Twenty-four women and 89 males were among the 114 persons that died. Nine people died in Jeddah, seven in Madinah, two in Mina, two at Muzdalifah, two on Mount Arafat, and 94 in Makkah.

88,418 Bangladeshi pilgrims had returned home as of Saturday.

Tens of thousands of Muslims began departing Islam's holiest city on June 30 after completing the annual hajj pilgrimage in the searing Saudi Arabian summer heat.

This year, almost 1.8 million worshipers participated in the hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam and one of the greatest religious gatherings in the world.

According to Saudi authorities, as temperatures reached to 48 degrees Celsius during the yearly rituals, more over 2,000 people this year had heat stress.

Since many victims were not taken to hospitals or clinics, the actual number of cases of heat stress, which includes heatstroke, fatigue, cramps, and rashes, is likely far higher.

The attendance figures this year were significantly higher than the 926,000 from the previous year, when numbers were restricted to one million because to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Only 10,000 were allowed in 2020, rising to nearly 59,000 a year later.

In recent years hajj, which follows the lunar calendar, has fallen in the Saudi summer, at a time when global warming is making the desert climate even hotter.
