Ex-SP Babul, His father Acquitted of DSA Charge

In the case brought by PBI Chief Banaj Kumar Majumder under the Digital Security Act, charges against former police superintendent Babul Akhter and his father Abdul Wadud Mia were dropped.

The allegations against Babul's brother Md Habibur Rahman Labu and journalist Elias Hossain in the same case, however, were recognized by the tribunal.

According to Public Prosecutor Nazrul Islam Shamim, Judge AM Julfiker Hayet of the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal made the ruling after carefully reviewing the case dockets and other pertinent paperwork.

The tribunal set the hearing date for the charge framing against the defendants in the case for August 31.

Labu, one of the accused, is currently out on bond while Elias is missing.

Elias fled the country to escape being arrested when the tribunal issued an arrest order for him.

On April 19, Dhanmondi Police Station Inspector Md Rabiul Islam, who is also the case's investigation officer, handed the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court the charge sheet.

In the charge sheet, the IO identified Elias Hossain as a wanted fugitive and asked the court to issue an arrest warrant for him.

The PBI director filed a complaint with the Dhanmondi Police Station on September 27 of last year accusing Babul and three others of disseminating false and inaccurate information about the Mitu murder investigation.

On June 5, 2016, Babul's wife Mitu was stabbed and shot dead while she was taking her son to his school bus stop at the port city's GEC intersection. After the murder, Babul filed a case against three unidentified men with the Panchlaish Police Station.

Later, PBI took over the case from DB of CMP.

On May 11 last year, Chattogram PBI summoned Babul to its office for interrogation. He failed to give satisfactory answers to the detectives and was taken into PBI custody.

The following day, Mitu's father filed a murder case against eight people, making Babul the prime accused in the case. Mitu's father alleged that Babul is the mastermind of the killing and he killed his wife over extramarital affairs.
