5 Get Death Penalty over Lakshmipur Jubo League Leader Murder

For the 2015 murder of a Jubo League leader, a Lakshmipur court on Wednesday sentenced five persons to death and 14 others to life in jail.

Madhu, Mamun, Babu (also known as Galakata Babu), Shamim, and Kawsar (also known as Choto Kawsar) are the condemned inmates.

The other 14 are Jahangir Alam, Nehal, Borhan, Tuhin, Zakir Hossain, Sohrab Hossain, Basir Ahmed, Mizan, Alamgir Hossain, Kasir Ahmed, Quamrul Islam, Anwar Hossain, Tarek Aziz Sumon and Tipon alias Jahangir Alam.

The court also fined them Tk20,000 each; in default of which they would have to undergo another year of rigorous imprisonment.

The other defendants had been tried in absentia, leaving just Madhu and Tipon in the dock.

Syeda Amina Farhin, an additional district and sessions judge in Lakshmipur, imposed the penalty.

The prosecution claims that Solaiman Uddin Jisan and Mamunur Rashid, deputy president of Chandraganj union unit Jubo League, were enemies.

Mamun used to receive death threats from "Jisan Bahini" for impeding their plans.

Jisan, however, lost his life in a "gunfight" with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) soldiers. When Jisan passed away, Tuhin, his younger brother, used to serve as the leader of "Jisan Bahini."

Mamun helped the police apprehend "Jisan Bahini" members.

Manun was later killed on May 18, 2015, by the inmates.

Fakhrul Islam, brother of Mamun, filed a case at Chandraganj police station against 10 identified and 14-15 unidentified people.

Police submitted a chargesheet against 21 people on September 10, 2016.

After examining records and witnesses, the court also acquitted two people as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
