Two Held for Burning Quran in Sylhet

Two persons were apprehended by police on Monday for reportedly setting fire to the holy Quran in Sylhet. 

Nurur Rahman, the president of Dhanupara Ideal College, is one of the prisoners. It was impossible to determine the identify of the other prisoner. 

According to Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner Md Elias Sharif, two inmates are being charged with burning the Quran in the Akhalia neighborhood of the city.

Nurur Rahman Islami, the school's chairman, was a member of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir. He said that he is a graduate of Kushtia Islamic University. 

The SMP commissioner also mentioned that the local teachers, students, and other citizens were indignant with the chairman over the Quran's burning. "At one point, they came under attack. Both the chairman and the second man suffered severe beatings. Later, the cops came to their assistance. 

The commissioner said that the matter is now under control. 

Following the event on Sunday night, there was animosity among the locals. Around 11:30 p.m., some neighborhood residents confined the college's president in a room. 

Police dispersed irate people who attempted to block the Sylhet-Sunamganj route.

Later, the locals brought out a procession and attacked the police. Law enforcers then tried to bring the situation under control by firing sound grenades and blank rounds. Police special forces brought the situation under control after 2am.
