Visiting US congressman Ed Case and Richard McCormick were informed by foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Sunday that there is no chance of establishing a consensus since the BNP wants the government to resign.

When the congressman asked whether there was a way to establish consensus, he delivered the message.

Momen also questioned them about whether the US administration will leave office before the local poll.

He claimed that in order to organize a free and fair election, all political parties must make earnest efforts.

The foreign minister assured reporters that the election will be conducted in accordance with the law.

According to him, the Bangladeshi government wants peaceful, transparent, and fair elections in which all political parties may participate.

According to Momen, they also spoke about the Rohingya situation, the Indo-Pacific area, and Bangladesh's Indo-Pacific Outlook, which calls for a free, just, inclusive, and safe region.

On Sunday afternoon, Foreign Minister Momen met with the visiting members of the US Congress at the State Guest House Padma.

Rep. Case represents the Democratic Party in Hawaii, whereas Rep. McCormick represents the Republican Party from Georgia.

Peter Haas, the US ambassador to Bangladesh, attended the conference as well.

From the Bangladesh side, among others, Special Envoy to the Prime Minister for Climate Change Saber Hossain Chowdhury; Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Kazi Nabil Ahmed; and Mohammad A. Arafat were present at the meeting.

In the morning, the congressmen visited Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka.

The congressmen are scheduled to meet leaders of various political parties.

Case and McCormick will visit Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar on Monday and hold meetings with various stakeholders.

The US embassy said they are pleased to welcome the first congressional delegation since 2017.

While in Dhaka, representatives McCormick (R-GA) and Case (D-HI) are meeting with government officials, and civil society members to discuss the importance of free and fair elections and issues of mutual interest to strengthen bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the United States.
