Law Minister Anisul Huq has stated that Bangladesh wants to sign an extradition pact with the United Kingdom and that discussions in this respect have already taken place with the British High Commissioner in Dhaka.

"We have discussed the possibility of an extradition pact with the British High Commissioner in Dhaka. The British government is anticipated to respond to our plea, according to Huq, who was cited by PTI.

Last week, the law minister attended a G20 ministerial conference on combating corruption in Kolkata.

His comments came shortly after Tarique Rahman, the fugitive BNP leader, was sentenced in a money laundering case by a Bangladeshi court.

According to Huq, Bangladesh is attempting to repatriate cash that has been unlawfully removed from the nation and stowed away overseas.

In a money laundering case, a Bangladeshi court had earlier this month sentenced Rahman to nine years in prison and his wife Zubaida to three years in exile.

Former prime minister Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman, the interim head of the BNP, were permitted to depart for London after signing a behavior bond following their 2008 arrest for graft by a caretaker government supported by the army.

Huq said, "We also want the money he laundered abroad to come home."

"Tarique Rahman, who was detained by a caretaker administration, was not detained by the Awami League government. The Anti-Corruption Commission probed the cases against him and submitted the chargesheet on the basis of which the judiciary has passed sentences," the minister pointed out in answer to opposition charges of bias in the prosecution of the BNP leader.
