On the 48th anniversary of his martyrdom and National Mourning Day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid a wreath at the tomb of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

After laying the wreath, the prime minister observed a period of sombre silence in remembrance of the architect of freedom, who was cruelly murdered together with the majority of his family on the terrible night of August 15, 1975, by some angry army personnel.

A state salute was given on the occasion by a well-dressed group of military personnel as the bugle sounded the final post.

The premier then presented Fateha and munajat to the cemetery, along with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, in an effort to bring the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib, and other August 15 martyrs everlasting rest. There was a speaker, a cabinet, the heads of the three services, an IGP, and members of the prime minister's family.

Additionally, prayers were made for the country's ongoing peace, growth, and prosperity.

Sheikh Hasina, the president of the Awami League (AL), afterwards laid another wreath at Bangabandhu's tomb on behalf of her party, flanked by other AL leaders.

Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the speaker, honored Bangabandhu by placing a wreath at his tomb.

Leaders of different associate bodies of AL and its front organizations also laid wreaths at Bangabandhu's grave.

Earlier, Sheikh Hasina arrived at Tungipara, the ancestral home of Bangabandhu, by a helicopter at 11:35 am today, after placing wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka as part of the national programme.

The premier also visited the Banani graveyard in Dhaka and spread flower petals on the graves of the August 15 martyrs and offered Fateha and joined a munajat there.

Bangabandhu, his spouse Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib, their three sons -- Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russel -- and most of his family members and three close relatives were assassinated in cold blood on the fateful night of August 15, 1975.

Two daughters of Bangabandhu -- incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana -- could escape the carnage as they were abroad at the time.
