Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, a war crimes defendant and head of Jamaat-e-Islami, would not be admitted in the city, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq on Tuesday.
He said that the license will not be granted in light of the violence and damage committed by Jamaat-Shibir activists on Monday night.
At a news conference over the killing of Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi and the ensuing reactions at Mintu Road in the capital this morning, the DMP commissioner made the comments.
After the Fajr prayers, according to the DMP head, Jamaat-Shibir members gathered in the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital area and conducted demonstrations near the ambulance transporting Sayeedi's body.
In front of BSMMU in Dhaka's Shahbagh, they also assaulted police and vandalized a few vehicles.
Later, when police arrived on the scene, they had no choice but to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Delwar Hossain Sayeedi died away earlier on Monday night while receiving care at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
