Due to hill runoff from upstream, the water level of Bhogai, Chellakhali and Maharshi rivers in Sherpur's Srivardi, Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas has increased and flooded the lower areas of 20 villages in less than 6 unions. As a result, the plantation of about 1 thousand hectares of land in those areas has benn drowned. And about 30 hectares of vegetable fields were submerged. The suffering of the common people has increased and the rural roads have been submerged in the torrential water.

It has been reported that the water level of Bhogai, Chellakhali and Maharshi rivers in Sherpur increased due to the hill slope coming down from Meghalaya, India on Sunday, August 13. That water sinks the lower areas of various villages of Nalitabari, Jhenaigati and Srivardi upazilas.

However, the local farmers are feeling relieved as the water level of Maharshi and other rivers has reduced since Tuesday (August 15) morning.

Due to heavy rainfall in Meghalaya, India, the rainwater overflows and flows through the mentioned mountain river in Sherpur and floods the lower areas of the district.

In this regard, the deputy director of the district agriculture department. According to Sukalp Das, about 1000 hectares of seedlings and 30 hectares of vegetables have been completely and partially submerged in 3 Upazillas of the border due to heavy rains and landslides in the district. However, this water will not harm the crop. However, it is a different matter if more rain and rising water lead to flooding.

Faruque Al Masood, Executive Officer of Jhenaigati Upazilla, said that the water level has gone down in one day, so there is no news of any damage or water retention. However, he said that we are prepared in case of damage. Besides, he said about the flooding of the lower areas, there is no possibility of any damage due to the fact that water accumulates in the lower areas for 6/7 days.
