Country Marks 18th Anniv of Series Bomb Blasts in 63 Districts

The sequence of bomb attacks that occurred in 63 districts throughout the nation on this day 18 years ago left two people dead and over 50 others wounded.

Around 500 explosives detonated on this day in 2005 at 434 sites across 63 districts. The chaos was caused by the outlawed terrorist organization Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

Political parties and socio-cultural organizations will mark the anniversary of the bombings around the nation by reiterating their plea to end militancy in the nation.

In relation to the bombs, 159 cases were reportedly filed at various police stations around the nation, according to police headquarters.

Trials in 94 instances have already concluded, and 334 defendants have received varying prison sentences.

It said that 349 people who had been charged with involvement in the explosions had all been cleared of all charges.

Twenty-seven suspects in the explosions received the death penalty, and eight of them were executed.

Through the explosions, the JMB attempted to demonstrate its presence. But the execution of JMB's top six executives in 2007 severely hampered their organizational efforts.

The six commanders, Siddiqul Islam Bangla Bhai, Shaikh Abdur Rahman, Ataur Rahman Sunny, Abdul Awal, Khaled Saifullah, and Salahuddin, were hung on March 30, 2007, for the murder of two judges in the Jhalakathi area.
