Syed Jahangir Alam, the mayor of Dinajpur Municipality, has been called by the Supreme Court's Appellate Division for making disparaging remarks against a judge following the decision in a case involving BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
A six-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique issued the decision requiring him to appear before the court on August 24 after four SC attorneys submitted a petition seeking the requisite instructions in this respect.
The court further demanded that he provide justification for why he should not face punishment for defaming an apex court judge.
Besides, the court asked Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman to immediately remove the YouTube video containing his comments.
Earlier, Syed Jahangir Alam made defamatory remarks on Justice M Enayetur Rahim, a senior judge of the Appellate Division, over a judgement he delivered in a case against Begum Zia.
