Ahead of the upcoming national elections, 290 police officers are being promoted to the posts of SP and Additional DIG by creating temporary 'supernumerary posts'. The government has already approved this promotion.

On Thursday (September 7), the Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification in this regard. As per the notification - 140 of the newly created posts will be promoted to the post of Additional Deputy Inspector General. And 150 will be promoted to the post of Superintendent of Police.

However, this order must be approved by the Finance Department. The term of this supernumerary post will be one year from the date of creation. Incidentally, supernumerary terms are terms beyond the number. In this, the officer holds the same post and performs the same duties even after promotion.

According to sources, 529 officers were sent promotion requests by creating supernumerary posts at the police headquarters. In view of this, the Ministry of Home Affairs has taken this decision.

As per the request, the police headquarters has sought promotions of 15 to the post of Additional Inspector General (Grade 1), 34 to the post of Additional IG (Grade 2), 140 to the post of DIG, 150 to the post of Additional DIG, and 190 to the post of SP.

Requesting anonymity, an official of the police headquarters said that the rest of the officers will be promoted in phases.

Explaining the creation of posts, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that these posts have been created under a 'special system' to solve the problem of the pending promotion process in the police administration. He said that if supernumerary posts are not created, officers will not get promotions until 2030.

However, sources said many police officers were disappointed at not being promoted. Police headquarters officials say the lack of promotion opportunities is frustrating for officers.
