The US Insists On Free, Fair Polls In Bangladesh

The Under Secretary of the United States for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, Uzra Zeya, has once again called upon Bangladesh to ensure free and fair elections in the upcoming polls.

She made this statement during a meeting with Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

On Tuesday, September 19th, Under Secretary Uzra Zeya tweeted about her discussion with Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, emphasizing the importance of unbiased and transparent elections, freedom of expression, and humanitarian assistance for Rohingya and their host communities.

It's worth noting that Uzra Zeya had previously visited Dhaka for a four-day trip on July 11th of the current year as part of her role in the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. During her visit, she also highlighted the significance of free and fair elections in Bangladesh and expressed support for these initiatives. Donald Lu, the Assistant Secretary for South Asian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, accompanied her during her visit to Dhaka.

Furthermore, during a briefing in New York, U.S. Secretary of State A.K. Abdul Momen emphasized the need for internal unity within political parties to ensure fair elections. He stressed the importance of improving U.S.-Bangladesh relations and deepening ties, as President Joe Biden wishes to strengthen the relationship between the United States and Bangladesh.
