Singapore has announced that the consulate of Singapore in Dhaka will be upgraded to high commission. The announcement was made at the Bangladesh-Singapore Foreign Ministers' meeting on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday (September 20).

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a bilateral meeting was held with Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen and Foreign Minister of Singapore Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan. In this, the Foreign Minister of Singapore Dr. Balakrishnan announced the promotion of the Consulate of Singapore in Dhaka to High Commission.

Bangladesh-Singapore established diplomatic relations on February 16, 1972. Bangladesh established a trade commission with the country in 1973 after establishing diplomatic relations. Later, after ten years, Bangladesh opened a full-fledged diplomatic mission in the country in 1983 under the leadership of a resident high commissioner. On the other hand, Singapore opened a consulate office in Dhaka on 15 December 1997.

26 years after the opening of the consulate office, the announcement of a High Commission in Dhaka came from the side of Singapore.
