DB Files Charge Sheet Against 9 Including BSL Leader

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has filed a supplementary charge sheet against nine individuals, including leaders affiliated with Bangladesh Chhatra League, in connection with the 2018 attack on former US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Marcia Bernicat.

According to DB Assistant Commissioner Rajon Kumar Saha, the charge sheet was presented to the court on September 19.

Among those accused in the charge sheet are Mohammad Ishtiaq Mahmud, the brother-in-law of Badiul Alam Majumdar, Secretary of Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujon), and Naimul Hasan alias Russell, the president of Mohammadpur Thana Chhatra League.

The official further revealed that many of the individuals named in the charge sheet are associated with the Awami League and Chhatra League as leaders and activists.

The incident occurred on the night of August 4, 2018, when former US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat attended a dinner at the residence of Badiul Alam Majumder in Mohammadpur. She was attacked as she was entering her car after the dinner.

A case was filed by Sujan Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder with Mohammadpur police station, naming Chhatra League leader Naimul Hasan, along with others, as the accused. The attackers also targeted Badiul Alam Majumder's residence that night, issuing threats to him and his family, as stated in the DB's charge sheet.

Despite five years having passed since the attack on former Ambassador Marcia Bernicat's motorcade, no arrests have been made, and justice has not been served. In August of this year, the DB reached out to the US embassy in Dhaka to seek information regarding the attack on Marcia Bernicat.

Recently, the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court directed the DB to conduct further investigations into the case. Marcia Bernicat served as the US Ambassador to Dhaka from 2015 to 2018.
