The fire that broke out at Shekherchar Baburhat in Narsingdi, the country’s largest wholesale cloth market, on Sunday (Ocotber 29) at around 11:30 pm, has been brought under control. 17 units of the fire service brought the fire under control around 2:15 am after about two and a half hours of effort.

Narsingdi Fire Service says “the fire started from a shed of clothesline” at around 11:30 pm. The fire immediately spread to nearby shops. On receiving the information, 17 units of Narsingdi Sadar, Madhabdi, Palash, Monohardi, and Araihazar joined to douse the fire. The fire was brought under control around 2:15 am after trying for about two and a half hours. More than 50 shops were gutted in the incident.

Due to the “narrow road” inside the market, there was a problem for the fire service vehicles to enter. As a result, they suffered a quiet while dousing the fire, the fire service also said.

“Friday and Saturday is our market day. Some sales were also done on Sundays. So every shop had enough clothes. 70-80 small and big shops have been gutted,” Giasuddin, president of Baburhat Merchants Association and chairman of Shilmandi Union.

Narsingdi Fire Service deputy director Abul Kalam Azad said that it is not known how the fire started. No casualties were reported. 17 units of fire service brought the fire under control around 2:15 am after trying for about two and a half hours. However, the extent of the damage is not yet known.
