BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been sent to jail in the case of Ramna police station in connection with the attack and vandalism of the Chief Justice's residence.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin's court on Sunday night (October 29) refused bail and ordered to send him to court.

Meanwhile, Mirza Fakhrul's lawyers filed two applications. In an application, his lawyer Syed Zainal Abedin Mejbah requested to divide him as a first class prisoner. In another application, it was requested to continue his treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

During the bail hearing, Syed Zainal Abedin Mejbah told the court, "We know whether you can give bail or not. So I am making two applications in advance. If he is sent to jail, he should be given a division as a former minister and former MP and treated at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University."

On behalf of Fakhrul, Omar Faruq Faruqi, Mohsin Miya, Mosleh Uddin Jasim and other lawyers held a bail hearing. They said that Mirza Fakhrul was present as the chief guest at the stage of the rally about one-and-a-half kilometers away from the scene of the case.

Lawyers said that he was arrested in this case by harassment on false charges. He is an 81-year-old man, the longest-standing leader of BNP in the country and a clean politician. He is suffering from various physical ailments and will not abscond if he is granted bail under any conditions.

On the other hand, the lawyer of the state, Metropolitan PP Abdullah Abu Jamin, opposed the application and said that Mirza Fakhrul was the main planner of this movement. They attacked the Chief Justice's residence, killed policemen, set cars on fire and damaged property of the general public. In this case he does not need to be present at the scene.

PP said, these incidents happened with Fakhrul's preplanning and guidance. He has committed these incidents with the intention of destabilizing a democratically elected government and creating anarchy in the country at the instigation of various local and foreign quarters. He cannot escape responsibility of this incident. Therefore, we oppose his bail.

After the hearing, the court denied bail and ordered him to be sent to jail. However, he allowed the division plea filed on his behalf and ordered proper treatment as per the prison rules.

The detective police took Mirza Fakhrul in a white microbus from the detective office on Minto Road to the CMM court at 7:40 pm on Sunday. The vehicle carrying him reached the CMM court around 8 pm.

The bail hearing started around 9 pm. After an hour-long hearing, the court rejected the bail application at 9:55 pm and ordered him to be sent to jail. Soon after this Fakhrul was taken to Keraniganj Central Jail.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was arrested from his home in Gulshan at around 9:30 am on Sunday by the Detective Police (DB).

Fakhrul's wife Rahat Ara Begum said that a team of detective police came to the house and took the CCTV camera device. After 10 minutes, he went to his house and arrested Mirza Fakhrul and took him to the intelligence office. Taking a sick person like this is unacceptable.
