A clash broke out between workers in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry and law enforcement officers in the Jamgora area of Ashulia today when the workers attempted to block the Abdullahpur-Bypail road.

Police responded by using teargas shells, rubber bullets, and water cannons to disperse the workers who were protesting for a wage increase. Several individuals sustained injuries during this conflict, as media reported.

The workers' attempt to obstruct the road met with resistance from the police. The clash was ongoing as of the time this report was filed at approximately 9:00 a.m.

According to Mahmud Naser Johny, an additional superintendent of Ashulia Industrial Police-1, the conflict arose when workers, having completed their attendance at the garment factories in Ashulia, began to gather on the road.

This incident transpired after a week of labor unrest, during which nearly 500 production units in Ashulia, Konabari, Gazipur, Mirpur, Mouchak, and Savar had been temporarily closed by garment factory owners. These closures were a result of the ongoing labor disputes.

Garment workers have been staging demonstrations, advocating for a wage increase in response to soaring prices of essential goods and increased housing expenses. They believe it is necessary to revise their current salary due to these economic challenges.
