Fakhrul Files Bail Petition In High Court

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday (December 3) filed a bail petition to the High Court in a case filed over an attack on the chief justice's home allegedly by BNP activists.

The petition was filed to a High Court bench led by Justice Md Salim, said Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, one of Mirza Fakhrul's lawyers.

Earlier on November 22, a Dhaka court rejected BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s bail petition in the case.

On November 2, Advocate Joynul Abedin filed a petition seeking bail for the BNP leader. The court fixed November 20 for a hearing. The bail hearing of the case was fixed on November 22 due to Metropolitan Public Prosecutor (PP) Abdullah Abu’s illness.

On October 30, a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate sent Fakhrul to jail in the case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin passed the order after the investigating officer produced him before the court with a plea to keep him in jail in connection with the case, said Joynal Abedin.

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Police detained Fakhrul from his Gulshan residence on October 29.

Apart from Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the accused in the case are – BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas, Ameer Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, BNP Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu, Abdul Awal Mintu, Ahmed Khan, Advocate Zainul Abedin, Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Samsuzzaman Dudu, Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Barrister Shahjahan Omar, Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP Convener Abdus Salam, VP Joynal, Metropolitan North BNP Acting Convener Farhad Halim Dunar, Member Secretary Aminul Haque.

On October 28, BNP leaders and activists armed with batons, iron rods, bricks, and cocktails held an illegal assembly in front of the Chief Justice's residence in Bangladesh. They vandalized buses and pickups, causing damage of approximately Tk20 lakh. The marchers chanted anti-state slogans, created public panic, and attacked police with intent to kill and injure them.
