India's Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi referred to the upcoming 12th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh as an internal matter of the country. He said this at the weekly press conference on Friday (December 29).

Arindam Bagchi said that elections are an internal matter of Bangladesh and we believe that the people of Bangladesh will decide their own future.

Responding to a question during the weekly media briefing here, Bagchi said, as a close friend and partner of Bangladesh, India intends to see a peaceful election in Bangladesh and will support Bangladesh's dream of stability, peaceful and progressive nation.

Referring to recent allegations by the BNP spokesperson that India is directly "supporting the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led government and influencing the upcoming elections," the spokesperson declined to comment, saying, "We do not want to comment on the policies of any third country."

When asked about the recent much-discussed 'visit' of US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter D Haas to India, Bagchi said that he had seen media reports about the US Ambassador's visit to India.

He said it could be a personal visit. But I don't know details about it. So I have nothing to say right now.
