Police-Locals Clash In Capital

Locals clashed with the police and set fire to two vehicles on Sunday (December 31) morning after the body of a domestic help had been recovered in front of a building in Banasree area of Bangladesh capital Dhaka. Police controlled the situation by lobbing tear gas shells.

The body of the domestic help, Asma Begum, aged over 40, was recovered in front of Hossain Manzil at Block-D of Bansaree in the morning, police said. She used to work at an apartment in the building.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Motijheel division deputy commissioner Hayatul Islam Khan said that locals were furious over the incident, and they blamed the apartment owner for murdering the domestic help. Police went to the spot to recover the body and inquire about the incident and agitated people attacked the police personnel.

The agitated people vandalized the building and torched two vehicles parked on the ground floor of the building, said Rampura police station inspector for operations, Mokhlesur Rahman.

The flame spread to the first and second floors too. Later, Fire Service units rushed to the spot and doused the fire.

DC Hayatul said that they were yet to confirm the reasons behind the death. Police fired teargas shells as several policemen were injured during the clash, said inspector Mokhlesur.

A tense situation is prevailing in the area over the death and extra police forces were deployed in the area to avoid any further untoward incidents.
