Boat Supporter Killed By Independent’s Followers

A supporter of Awami League candidate was shot to death and another injured in an attack allegedly by the supporters of an independent candidate at village Munshikandi under Sadar upazila in Munshiganj district on Thursday (January 4).

The deceased is Dalim Sarkar, 35, a supporter of AL-backed candidate Mrinal Kanti Das for Munshiganj-3 constituency.

Locals said that a group of supporters of independent candidate Md Foysal Biplab, led by Shipon Patwari, brother of Mollakandi union chairman Ripon Patwari, stormed into the election camp of ‘boat’ candidate at about 12:30am and opened fire, leaving Dalim injured critically.

The assailants then caught another AL candidate’s supporter, Md Sohel, when he was trying to save Dalim and beat him mercilessly.

Later, injured Dalim and Soheld were taken to Munshiganj Sadar Hospital from where Dalim was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his situation deteriorated.

Dalim was declared dead at about 8:00am on Thursday, said DMCH police outpost in-charge Md Bachchhu Mia.

Munshiganj superintendent of police Mohammad Aslam Khan said that they were trying to arrest the attackers and that additional police were deployed in the area to avoid any further untoward incident.
