British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke has affirmed the United Kingdom's commitment to strengthening its relationship with Bangladesh, notwithstanding concerns raised about the country's electoral process and human rights record.

Following a meeting with Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, Cooke stated that the UK government had stated on January 8 outlining its stance on the election, democracy, and human rights.

Despite these concerns, she expressed the intention to engage constructively with the government and political parties.

Cooke emphasized the UK's interest in enhancing trade and investment, as well as bolstering its security partnership with Bangladesh.

Additionally, she underscored the importance of bilateral cooperation in addressing challenges like climate change, migration, and the welfare of the Rohingya.

Despite reservations about the election's fairness expressed by the US and the UK, Cooke reiterated the UK's commitment to a deep and historic friendship with Bangladesh.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, in a statement issued after the vote, criticized the election for not meeting democratic standards, condemning mass arrests of opposition members and poll-related violence.

However, the Foreign Office pledged ongoing support for a process fostering sustainable political settlement and an active civil society.
