At least 513 students killed themselves across Bangladesh in 2023, social organisation Aachol Foundation said on Saturday. The report is showing that 165 of them chose suicide out of pride. And the number of school, college and university students who committed suicide in the previous year (2022) was also a huge number 532. As such, the number of students committing suicide in 2022 and 2023 is close.

The organisation, initiated by students, came up with the information while revealing the organisation’s study report on the issue at a virtual press conference.

The study report said that, among the deceased, 44.2 per cent were school students,  27.2 per cent were college students, 19.1 per cent were university students and 9.4 per cent were Madrasah students.

According to the report, the highest 66.5 per cent of them were from the 13 to 19 years age group. Girls students accounted for 60.2 per cent of all deceased.

The highest number of students, 32.2 per cent, committed suicide out of emotion, while romantic relationships and failure in examinations also caused many students to commit suicide.

The highest 149 students committed suicide in Dhaka division while lowest 36 students in Mymensingh.

Tansen Rose, the president of the Aachol Foundation, which primarily works to make students aware of the importance of mental health, said that authorities must take the issue seriously to prevent the future of the country from destruction.
