Bangladesh has been placed 10th on the list of the most corrupt countries out of 180 worldwide, according to the Global Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2023 by Transparency International (TI). Dropping one position from 2022, Bangladesh scored 24 out of 100 in 2023.

Iftekharuzzaman, the Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh, provided detailed insights into the findings and discussed the prevailing state of corruption during a media briefing on Tuesday.

In the global ranking for 2023, Bangladesh is positioned at 149th out of 180 countries.

In the South Asian region, only Afghanistan ranked lower with a score of 20. Other neighboring countries had varying scores: Pakistan at 29, Nepal at 35, Sri Lanka at 34, and India at 39, as per the index released by the Berlin-based organization.

The Corruption Perception Index (CPI) is a widely used global corruption ranking that assesses the perceived corruption level in each country's public sector based on expert and businesspeople opinions. Utilizing a scale from zero to 100, where zero signifies high corruption and 100 represents a very clean system, the CPI relies on 13 independent data sources.

Since 2012, Bangladesh's CPI score has fluctuated in the mid to high 20s, achieving its peak score of 28 in 2017. The country's previous lowest score was 25, recorded in 2014, 2015, and 2022.

While several countries globally have witnessed improvements in their scores, the Asia Pacific region experienced another year of "little to no meaningful progress" in 2023, maintaining an average CPI score of 45, according to the organization.

Denmark secured the top spot as the least corrupt country in the index, boasting a score of 90, followed by Finland, New Zealand, Norway, and Singapore.
