The executive editor of the Daily Star, Syed Ashfaqul Haq, and his wife Tania Khondokar have been sent to jail in connection with the case of the death of housemaid Priti Urang (15) at a residential building in Mohammadpur, the capital.

Today, Wednesday (February 7), Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibul Haque rejected the bail and remand applications.

Earlier in the day, investigation officer Sub-Inspector Nazmul Hasan Asamidh of Mohammadpur Police Station appeared in court and applied for a five-day remand.

Chaitanya Chandra Haldar, the lawyer for the accused, applied for bail after the remand was canceled. The judge directed both parties to send the accused to jail.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, a case was filed against managing editor Syed Ashfaqul Haq and his wife Tania Khondokar on behalf of the father of the victim, Lukesh Urang.

According to the charge sheet, on Tuesday (February 6), housemaid Priti fell from the ninth floor of a residential building in Mohammadpur, the capital. She had been working there for almost two years, at the residence of the executive editor of the Daily Star, Syed Ashfaqul Haq, in Moulvibazar's Kamalganj Upazila.

A similar incident occurred at Ashfaqul Haq's house last year on August 6. A nine-year-old domestic worker was seriously injured after falling. Allegations of torture led to a case being filed against Ashfaqul Haq, his wife Tania Haq, and another woman named Shilpi by the mother of the child at Mohammadpur Police Station.
