1 Lakh Tonnes Of Sugar Gutted In S Alam Warehouse Fire In Ctg

The blaze in the warehouse of S Alam Refined Sugar Mill in the Ichapur area of Karnaphuli police station of Chattogram was brought under control after about six and a half hours but was not extinguished till 1 am. The fire did not spread to the main plant of the sugar mill. S Alam Sugar Mill officials said the fire was confined to the sugar godown.

Senior Executive Engineer Hasmat Ali of S Alam Sugar Mill said this on Monday (March 4) night.

He said captive power in the factory is also safe. The entire factory process and factory are safe. Sugar godowns No. 1 and No. 2 caught fire. The fire of godown number two is under control but the fire service is working to extinguish the fire of godown number one. However, to prevent the fire from spreading, the supply belt from the godown to the factory's main plant has been disconnected, he said.

Meanwhile, Anwarul Islam, the official of the central media cell of the fire service, said that the fire was brought under control after about six and a half hours of effort around 10:30 pm. But not completely extinguished.

He said, that in case of a fire in a structure, coming under control means that it is not spreading anymore. After searching inside and outside the establishment, if no fire was found anywhere, the fire service announced a complete extinguishment.

S Alam Group Executive Director Subrata Kumar Bhowmik said that there was 1 lakh metric tonnes of raw sugar imported from Brazil in the godown, which is feared to have been burnt.

It is to be noted that the fire started from the warehouse of the factory around 4 pm on Monday. 18 units of fire service, navy, air force, army, and coast guard worked to control the terrible fire.
