Even though India has banned onion exports for an indefinite period, it will not impact Bangladesh markets, State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Tito has said.

“Onions will be loaded onto trains from India today or tomorrow and will enter Bangladesh within the next three days. And I am not aware of any issues with the onion imports from India,” he said in response to a reporters’ query at a reception for six lawmakers from Tangail, including himself, and the introduction of the newly elected committee members of the Tangail Press Club on Saturday evening, according to local media reports.

“There is no need for any police action or magisterial intervention in the normal buying and selling in the market. I believe there is an adequate supply of products in the market, and the prices are at a reasonable level," Tito said.

Regarding the increase in rice prices, the state minister mentioned that rice is a matter for the Ministry of Food, and thus, it would not be appropriate for him to comment on matters pertaining to another ministry.
