10 Killed In Nor'wester, Lightning Across The Country

Ten people including women and children were killed in nor'wester and lightning in different parts of the country. Among them, three women and children were killed by lightning in Jhalkathi, two in Patuakhali, two in Bhola, one each in Netrakona, Pirojpur and Jashore. Besides, at least 25 people were reported injured.

Jhalakathi: The district experienced heavy rain and thunderbolts on Sunday around 10:30 am. At that time, a woman at 44 years age named Helena Begumdied by lightning in Munsirabad village of Awrabuniya union of Kathalia upazila of the district.

Also a child named Mahia Akhter (12) was killed by lightning in Isalia village of Ponabalia union of Sadar upazila of the district. She died while bringing cows from the field. Besides, a woman named Minara Begum was seriously injured by lightning in Sheikher Union of Sadar Upazila. She also died later in the afternoon.

Shahidul Islam, OC of Jhalkathi Sadar Police Station, said that after 10 am on Sunday, trees were uprooted in many places of the district due to heavy rain. Hundreds of houses have been destroyed in different places. The entire district has been without electricity since morning.

Patuakhali: The Baufal upazila of Patuakhali has been also devastated by the nor'wester. In the district one person died after being crushed by a tree during the storm and a child was found dead in the street after the storm. Besides, at least 20 people were injured. 

Nor'wester hit Baufal around also at 11 am. One aged woman and a child died at that time. Apart from this, at least 20 people were injured when tree branches fell in the storm. Seven of the injured were sent to Barishal for better treatment. And amomg them three were sent to Dhaka in critical condition. Half a hundred houses in the upazila were damaged in the storm.

Bhola: About a hundred mud huts have been destroyed by the storm in Lalmohan and Manpura upazilas of this district. From the falling of a tree a person died in the storm. Also anothet one died during the storm. It is reported that the deceased was a resident of Farajganj Union of Lalmohan Upazila of Bhola. Besides, a young man died in Charlengutia.

Pirojpur: People also saw the rampage of nor'wester over here. The storm started around 10:30 in the morning. Hundreds of trees were uprooted in several areas of Pirojpur Municipality and Sadar Upazila. At that time, a woman named Ruby Begum (22) was killed when a tree fell on her house in Morichal village of Shariktala union in the municipal area. Two people were injured in this incident.

Mohammad Zahedur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Pirojpur, said that Sadar Upazila was the most affected by uprooting trees in the storm. The extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained.

Sunamganj: An injured person died under treatment due to the nor'wester in Shantiganj of the district. He was injured in a storm on the night of March 31. He died while undergoing treatment in a Sylhet hospital on Saturday (April 6) night. The name of the deceased young man is Akhtar Hossain (35), son of Afish Ali of Kalaiya village of Laxmanshree Union of Sunamganj Sadar Upazila.

Netrakona: A farmer named Shahid Mia (52) died due to lightning while working in haor in Khaliajuri upazila of the district. The incident took place at Rajghat haor of the upazila around 12:15 pm on Sunday. He is the son of Kofil Uddin of Jagannathpur village of Mendipur union of the upazila.

Jashore: A farmer named Abdul Malek Patwari died due to lightning in the district's Jhikargacha. The incident took place in Bara Podaul
