Election Commissioner (EC) Md Alamgir on Wednesday said that the member of parliament will not be allowed to take part in the campaign of upazila election.

“Members of parliament must go to his constituency. However, no candidate can go to the election campaign. On the day of polling, they can go to the centres and cast their votes. But they cannot take any candidate with them”.

He said these things in an exchange meeting on Wednesday afternoon with the candidates participating in the upazila parishad elections of Tangail district in the first phase of the election.

“If the law and order situation deteriorates or there is no fair election environment, then the on-duty presiding officers will be able to suspend voting. If he can't stop for any reason or any secret link with the candidate, then returning and assistant returning officers will be able to suspend voting,” said the election commissioner.

If such happens that the election cannot be conducted properly in any centre of the upazila election, and then the election commission can suspend the whole, said Alamgir.

He also said that if a candidate or his supporter attacks another candidate or supporter, sets fire or burns businesses, houses, which are criminal offences, the punishment will be more severe.

In this case, electoral conduct rules are not enough, there are more electoral laws, said the commissioner.
