The Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) is going to start drilling a new gas well found at Ambernagar village in Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali on Monday.

On April 22, Bapex installed the drilling rig for the project named as ‘Begumganj-4 (West) Appraisal Cum Development Well Drilling Project’.

Over 200 engineers and workers are joining the operations and will continue for the next 120, according to local media reports.

Initially, a target has been set to drill 3,200 metres, said Md Asaduzzaman, in-charge of drilling work at the well.

According to Bapex, the first gas well of Noakhali was found in Begumganj in 1976 and the second in 1978. However, no gas was later found in those two wells.

In 2013, a third well was discovered in the district and the gas from it went into production.

In 2018, the same well was worked over and is now supplying 8.0 million cubic feet of gas per day to the national grid.
