Following the longest heatwave in 75 years in the country, a brief shower lasting around an hour brought relief to the city dwellers of Dhaka.

Starting from around 12:00am today, the rain commenced accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms, significantly lowering the high temperatures prevailing in the environment due to the oppressive heatwave since Mrch 31.

Reports of rain came in from various parts of Dhaka city including Uttara, Bashundhara Residential Area, Mirpur, Mohakhali, Mogbazar, Mohammadpur and other parts of the city, as well as the outskirts in Savar.

In the evening, rain also graced parts of old Dhaka and the Jatrabari area in the capital.

As the rain provided much-needed respite, many took to their social media profiles to express gratitude.

"First rainfall after a record-breaking heatwave," wrote a social media user on Facebook, alongside a video capturing the refreshing downpour.

Monwar Hossain, metreologist at Bangladesh Metereology Department (BMD), said, "The rainfall from evening at different parts of Dhaka was very minimal. However, rainfall has started in most parts of Dhaka at midnight.

In the routine morning bulletin on Thursday, the met office forecasts rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind in parts of five divisions in the next 24 hours from 9:00am on Thursday.
