Chairman Candidate Lands In Jail For Money Laundering Case

The Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court on Tuesday sent Samsul Alam Chowdhury, a chairman candidate in the Faridpur Sadar upazila parishad elections, to jail, rejecting his bail petition in a case filed on charges of laundering Tk 2,000 crore.

Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain passed the order after the accused surrendered to the court, seeking bail in the case.

The court, however, granted bail to two other  accused—Amitab Bos, mayor of Faridpur Municipality, and Gulam Md Nasir, a commissioner of the municipality–in the case after their surrender.

Defence lawyer Shahinur Islam said that the court recently issued an arrest warrant against the accused as they surrendered to the court with a bail petition in the case.

After hearing, the court granted bail to Amitab and Nasir, but it sent Samsul Alam to jail, rejecting his petition.

On April 22, the court accepted a charge sheet against 47 people in the case filed over alleged laundering of Tk 2,000 crore and issued an arrest warrant against fugitives in the case.

On June 25, last year, the Criminal Investigation Department submitted a supplementary charge sheet against 37 new suspects, including the three accused in the case.

On June 26, 2020, the CID filed the case with the Kafrul police station against Sajjad Hossain Barkat, former general secretary of the AL Faridpur town unit, and his brother, Imtiaz Hasan Rubel, former president of Faridpur Press Club, under the Money Laundering Prevention Act.

The other people accused in the case are former local government, rural development, and co-operatives minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain’s brother Khandaker Mohatesham Babar, Faridpur district AL president Nazmul Islam Khandaker Levi, and Awami League and Jubo league leaders Fahad Bin Wazed, Asibur Rahman Farhan, Kamrul Hasan Devid, Arifur Rahman Dolon, and Tarikul Islam Nasim.
