Child Marriage and Child Abuse Increased during Corona

Women and children in Bangladesh are constantly being subjected to various forms of abuse.

This scene has been around for ages. But the number of these tortures seems to have increased comparatively much during the Corona period. A recent report by an organization named 'Manusher Jonno Foundation' said that violence against women and child marriage had risen alarmingly during the Corona period.

Shaheen Anam, Executive Director of 'Manusher Jonno Foundation', gave his opinion to Voice of America. He said that the crisis evolving in the family during the Corona period like financial, mental and various other disasters, has resulted in an increase in violence against women.

Razia Khatun, a resident of Baora village is a victim of child marriage. She said that she got married at a young age and her husband has no job. Razia's mother says her financial situation was very bad in Corona so got her minor daughter Razia married helplessly.

Meanwhile, UNICEF's Child Protection Specialist Sabnaj Zeherin said domestic violence against children had increased during the pandemic period.

Swapna, a 7th-grade student, is going through a lot of human stress. According to a survey by the 'Manusher Jonno Foundation', 12,640 women and children were victims of violence in 53 districts in June alone.
