Ex Major Sinha Killing:

Is the Police Dept under Pressure over Allegations against Officials?

In the last 24 hours, three OCs or officers in charge of police have been withdrawn on various charges including irregularities and torture in custody in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Netrokona Durgarpur Police Station OC Mizanur Rahman, Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station OC Abu. Shahjahan Kabir and Barguna Bamna Police Station OC Ilias Ali Talukder were withdrawn on separate charges.

In a video that went viral on social media last Saturday, it was seen that Nazrul Islam, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Bamna Police Station, was slapped by the officer-in-charge of the same police station, Md. Elias Ali Talukder.

It is known that OC Mohammad Elias Ali Talukder slapped his colleague for not charging in the protest.

Later, a committee was formed to investigate the incident. Mofizul Islam, head of the probe committee and Additional Commissioner of Police in Barguna, told BBC Bangla that the decision was taken after allegations of publicly slapping another police officer were proved.

"The allegations against him have been found to be true. We recommend withdrawing him and conducting a departmental inquiry against him. He has been withdrawn in the light of that recommendation," he said. Islam.

Teknaf OC Pradeep Kumar Das, Baharchhara police outpost in-charge Liaquat and several other police officers have been charged in the murder case after a former army officer, who was shot dead by police in Bangladesh recently.

The decision of withdrawal came on Tuesday, several days after the incident.

But human rights activists see the situation a little differently. Rights activists believe that the police force has come under some pressure due to the agitation created by Major Sinha's assassination.

They say that when the law enforcement agencies in the country are accused of being involved in a big incident, various criticisms are made, various steps are taken to get out of that situation.

Human rights activist and lawyer Elina Khan said the current situation has created some pressure in terms of the reputation of the police force. But he wants to see it as a strategy.

"It's a kind of pressure, of course. Because the explosion of the people, the speech of the people, has certainly created pressure for their reputation."

"But there have been a lot of incidents like this and they have gone out of their way. If a common man is punished for a crime, why don't the police come? So I want to call it a strategy," he said.

Senior police officials were contacted for comment but no response was received at the time of writing.

However, former Inspector General of Police Nurul Huda does not see the current situation as stressful. He said there are more than six hundred officers in charge in the country.

In the meanwhile, action has to be taken against the few who are accused of abuse of power. That is the rule.
