ULFA Leader Anup Chetia's Daughter Gets Married to Bangladeshi Youth

ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) general secretary Anup Chetia's daughter Bonya Barua (27) is getting married to a Bangladeshi youth. Anirban Chowdhury (30), son from Cumilla, Bangladesh, currently lives in Melbourne, Australia. The marriage will be completed on November 25 at the ISKCON temple in Melbourne. Anup Chetia told Assam media daily Assamiya Pratidin on the phone.

Anup Chetia said in an interview given to Assamiya Pratidin, an Indian Assamese media, "The two of them met while studying at the Master Mind International School in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. Then a relationship develops between them. For this reason, we have agreed to the marriage.

He also said, 'I have stayed in Bangladesh for 28 years. I got people's hospitality, and love. For this, the weakness of the people of Bangladesh works. That is also a reason for agreeing to this marriage.

In response to the question of whether there is any plan to go to Bangladesh, the top leader of ULFA said, "When I was in Bangladesh, I was hiding my identity. The rest of the time I was in jail. Now I want to inform everyone legally. But neither India nor Bangladesh government will see my departure well. However, I will go once I am related. I have many friends there. So, I have a great desire to meet them."

On December 21, 1997, Bangladesh Intelligence Police arrested Anup Chetia from a house in the Adabar area of ​​Dhaka. Thereafter three cases were registered against him for illegal stay in Bangladesh and illegal possession of foreign currency and a satellite phone. Bangladesh court sentenced him to three, four, and seven year's rigorous imprisonment respectively in three cases. His sentence expired in 2004 after seven years of serving three concurrent sentences. But since then he has been detained in jail.

On November 12, 2015, he was handed over to the BSF from Kashimpur Jail through the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. He is currently leading peace talks with the central government of India as the head of the pro-negotiation team of ULFA. Another section is led by Paresh Barua, ULFA-Swadan; who is currently doing armed movement as Chairperson and Commander in Chief.
