The nation will mark the holy day of Ashura on Saturday with the appropriate religious solemnity in honor of the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), a descendant of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

In the Hijri calendar of 1445, Saturday is the tenth day of the month of Muharram. Ashura is known to as the "Holy Ashura" on this day.

The Day of Karbala is described as a "mourning and heartbreaking event" that is extremely important to Muslims worldwide.

Muslims all across the globe remember the sacrifice made by Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), his family, and 72 of their supporters, who died as martyrs in 680 AD while defending justice and truth against Yazid troops in the Iraqi desert city of Karbala.

A beautiful example in the annals of mankind, their self-sacrifice at Karbala Maidan to defend the noble principles of Islam, the religion of peace and harmony.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina both sent a message on the night of the sacred Ashura in which they expressed their heartfelt appreciation for Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and the other Karbala martyrs.

The President noted that the Holy Ashura is an important and solemn day for the entire Muslim Ummah and said that the eternal words of the sacred Ashura, burning in memory of the tragic events of Karbala, inspire Muslims to speak out against oppression and injustice as well as to follow the path of truth and beauty.

The magnificent teachings of Holy Ashura, according to President Shahabuddin, should be reflected in everyone's life.

In her statement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina described the sacred Ashura as a very somber, important, and magnificent day.

She said all have to uphold the day's significance in their hearts and participate in public welfare work from their respective positions in establishing truth and justice in the national life and build a non-discriminatory, happy, prosperous and peaceful 'Sonar Bangladesh' and also the 'Smart Bangladesh' envisioned by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Referring to the ongoing dengue situation which has emerged after the Covid-19 pandemic, the premier said the government has taken necessary measures to prevent the dengue situation.

"We continue to provide all assistance to the people. Almighty Allah tests people's patience in adversity," she said, adding that at this time, everyone should help each other with their tolerant and sympathetic spirit and infinite patience.

The prime minister urged all to observe the holy Ashura maintaining proper health rules and offer special doa so that the Almighty Allah help get rid of this dengue situation.

Police have taken special security measures in the capital Dhaka on the occasion.

The day is a public holiday.

Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and private TV channels are airing special programmes while newspapers and online news portals publish supplements highlighting the significance of the day.
