The traditional Tangail sari, known for its rich cultural heritage, has been recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) product by the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) under the Ministry of Industries. Abul Basar Mohammad Tajul Islam, the Liaison Officer of the Ministry of Industries, confirmed the information on Wednesday evening.

Earlier, an application was submitted to the Ministry of Industries for patent, design, and trademark registration at the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) from the Tangail district administration on February 6.

It is worth mentioning that the Tangail sari, an iconic cultural symbol of Bangladesh, was granted GI status by India on January 2. However, controversy arose in Bangladesh after a post on the verified Facebook page of the Ministry of Culture of India.

The post stated, "The Tangail sari originates from West Bengal. It is a masterpiece of traditional hand weaving. Renowned for its intricate design, vibrant colors, and delicate embroidery motifs, it is a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of this region. Each Tangail sari reflects the skilled craftsmanship and richness of beauty of this region."

Following the visibility of the post, intense debates have erupted in Bangladesh, asserting the ownership of the GI status of Tangail sari by Bangladesh.

According to the Department of Patent, Design, and Trademarks of India, on September 8, 2020, a cooperative society in West Bengal applied for the patent of Tangail sari at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of India. Because of that application, the Design and Trademarks Division of the Ministry of Commerce of Bangladesh approved the Tangail sari as a product of West Bengal and Purba Bardhaman.

It is stated in the approval that the validity of this registration will remain until September 7, 2030.
