International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8th, is commemorated worldwide under the theme 'Investing in women: Accelerate progress'.

The United Nations underscores the critical importance of achieving gender equality and enhancing women's well-being across all spheres of life for the advancement of prosperous economies and a sustainable planet. However, a significant challenge looms ahead: a projected annual deficit of $360 billion in gender-equality measures by 2030.

Various women's, social, and political organizations have organized distinct programs to mark International Women's Day.

The origins of International Women's Day trace back to the Women's Day organized by the Socialist Party of America on February 28, 1909, in New York. Following this, the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference proposed the annual observance of Women's Day.

March 8 gained prominence as a national holiday in Soviet Russia after women were granted suffrage in 1917. Initially celebrated by socialist and communist movements, the day was later adopted by the United Nations in 1975.

In anticipation of the occasion, President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages extending greetings to women worldwide.

President Hamid emphasizes the need for both governmental and non-governmental entities to collaborate on various development initiatives aimed at empowering women.

He underscores the timeliness of this year's theme, 'Narir Somo Odhikar, Somo Sujog-Egiye Nite Hok Biniyog'.
