Sadaqatul Fitr, also known as Fitra, is a charitable obligation aimed at ensuring that the impoverished and vulnerable members of society can partake in the celebrations of Eid. It is customary to offer Fitra before the Eid prayer.

During the time of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.), Sadaqatul Fitr typically amounted to one sa (approximately three kilograms and three hundred grams) of food, such as barley, dates, cheese, or raisins. This practice ensured that even the most basic food items were accessible to those in need.

On the morning of Eid, it becomes obligatory for individuals who possess wealth above the nisab threshold to give Fitrah on behalf of themselves and their dependents, regardless of age. However, providing Fitra for those who do not meet the wealth criteria is considered a recommended and praiseworthy act.

The amount traditionally given for Fitra is one sa of food items, such as flour or wheat. Hazrat Hasan Basri (R.A.) emphasized the importance of generosity, suggesting the giving of one saa of wheat when one is blessed with abundance.

Imam Azam Hazrat Abu Hanifa Numan Ibn Thabit (R.A.) suggested that giving Fitrah with goods of greater value is preferable, as it maximizes the benefit to the poor.

Fitrah can be distributed to the specified beneficiaries outlined in the Quran, including the poor, workers of Sadaqah, the helpless, new Muslims, slaves, debtors, those striving in the cause of Islam, travelers in need, and wayfarers.

It is permissible to give Fitrah in the form of prescribed food items, goods, their monetary value, or by purchasing other essential items like clothing. However, it is not permissible to give Fitrah to immediate family members or superiors.

Additionally, Sadaqatul Fitr can be given during Ramadan for the benefit of the recipients. It is essential to introspect and fulfill these charitable obligations before being held to account in the Hereafter, as advised by Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.).
