Cigarette prices are expected to rise once more as the government seeks to curb tobacco usage and enhance revenue collection from the habit-forming substance.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal recommended fixing the price of a lower slab of cigarette per 10 sticks to Tk 39 and above, while increasing the extra charge to 57 percent in his budget address.

The price of a medium slab cigarette per 10 sticks has been proposed at Tk63 and above, while the price of a high slab of 10 cigarette sticks has been proposed at Tk 102 and higher.

Tk135 and higher have been recommended for premium cigarettes.

These three slabs will be subject to a 65 percent additional duty.

The finance minister also proposed keeping the current prices of non-filtered 25-stick handmade bidi at Tk 18, 12-stick handmade bidi at Tk 9, and 8-stick handmade bidi at Tk 6, with an extra charge of 30% on all.

He also advised that the filtered 20-stick bidi be kept at Tk 19 and the 10-stick bidi be kept at Tk 10, with extra duty maintained at 40% for both.

Jarda's price will not change, and it will continue to be offered for Tk 40 per 10 gm. It will cost Tk 20 for 10 gm for Gul. For both, the supplementary duty rate will be 55 percent.
