Carew & Co, the only alcohol producer in Bangladesh, has
seen a 50 percent growth in domestic liquor sales in the last six months. At
the same time, the demand for alcohol in the country has also increased, the
company says. Carew & Co says they are increasing their production double in the New
Year.
The government is even planning to open the country's first beer
factory, the BBC reported.
Officials at the Department of Narcotics Control and the
Ministry of Industries say the demand for alcohol has been growing locally since
2016. Demand and production of alcohol have increased slightly in the last few
years due to demand from local people as well as foreign engineers and workers
working on various development projects in the country.
Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, managing director of Carew &
Co., the country's only alcohol producer, said the company had sold 42.62
million liters of liquor in the 2019-20 fiscal year. But in the fiscal year
2020-21, their company sold about 4.7 million liters of liquor.
Founded in 1938, Carew & Company has nine brands -
Yellow Label Malted Whiskey, Gold Ribbon Gin, Fine Brandy, Cherry Brandy,
Imperial Whiskey, Orange Curacao, Tsarina Vodka, Rosa Rum, and Old Rum.
In addition to alcoholic beverages, Carew & Co produces
vinegar, hand sanitizers, fertilizers, sugar, and molasses.
