In the capital, the cost of eggs has unusually grown during the last four to five days. On Friday, August 11, numerous grocery stores were selling one egg for Tk15 and an entire hali of eggs for Tk58.

A trader in Kalyanpur named Feroz Alam claimed that the cost of eggs at wholesale had gone up.

"At the moment, we are charging Tk58 for a hali of eggs and Tk15 for a single egg. I sold eggs for Tk50 five days ago, he said.

Eggs were being sold by vendors in the capital's Kawran Bazar kitchen market for Tk55 per hali and Tk160 for a dozen.

"I sold a dozen for Tk140 four days ago. A week ago, a dozen eggs were being offered for Tk 150. It was Tk140–145 the week before, according to a merchant called Yasin.

In response, on Thursday, August 10th, at night, the Department of Consumer Rights Protection carried out a special operation on the capital's Kawran Bazar cooking market.

Abdul Jabbar Mondal, assistant director for consumer rights, oversaw the campaign.

Due to the discrepancy between the purchase price and the selling price at the time, an egg merchant was fined Tk 20,000 for being unable to present the cash note.

According to Abdul Jabbar Mondal, there is a significant price differential between purchasing and selling eggs.

He said that the rapid spike in the price of eggs was the reason the procedure was carried out.

He stated that they had arrived to the scene to check for market manipulation.

The operation, according to the official, will be carried out nationwide beginning on Saturday, August 12th, to regulate the price of eggs.
