Following India's heavy tax on the export of onions, the price of local onions in the retail sector has soared to Tk100 per kilogram in a matter of a day. Yesterday, local onions were being offered for Tk85 per kg.
On Monday (21 August), local onions were being sold at the kitchen markets of Badda, Kawran Bazar, Rampura, Malibagh, and Shantinagar for Tk100 per kg.
Onions from abroad were priced between Tk80 and Tk85 per kilogram. Local onions were still being sold in certain stores for Tk90 per kilogram, nevertheless.
Yesterday, Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque said India increasing export duty will not affect the prices of onion in Bangladesh.
On 19 August, India announced a 40% increase in the export price of onions to protect its own market. Due to this, the price of onion has started to increase in the local market in Bangladesh.
