Bangladesh importing 17 thousand tons of onions from seven countries

From China, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, Qatar, Myanmar and Thailand - 17 thousand tons of onions are inwarding to the country. Traders have started the process of importing onions from these countries as an alternative to India. Already Traders have taken permission or IP approval to import the said amount of onions on last Tuesday (August 22) and yesterday Wednesday (August 23).

According to the information of the Ministry of Agriculture, the importers received permission to import onions from seven countries as an alternative to India till Wednesday evening, about 17 thousand 600 tons and of this, 12 thousand tons were allowed only on Wednesday.

Within this import permission most of 10 thousand tons of onions are coming from Pakistan. And 4 thousand from Egypt, 2 thousand from China as well as 1 thousand 100 tons are importing from Turkey. The remaining will be inwarded from other countries.

A top official of the agriculture department told the media that fearing regarding the prices in the market may rise further, hence traders are seeking permission to import from various alternative countries. As more new countries will be added to the import list in the next one week, import permits will also increase.

Earlier the traders of the country have taken permission to import 1.35 million tons of onions from India. Against this, 3 lakh 75 thousand tons already reached. 

Reported that the onions will arrive through container ships from seven countries which will arrive at Chittagong Port. From there it will be distributed around the different parts of the country through the wholesale market which may take 15 days to arrive.
