Gas prepaid meter fares were suddenly increased from Tk 100 to Tk 200 without any prior notice, creating dissatisfaction among customers. Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited has clarified its position with a notification of this incident.

Today, Monday (January 29), a notification was sent to the customers from the public relations department of Titas.

It is said that considering the life of each prepaid meter for 10 years, its price, installation, web system, meter and server maintenance charges, etc., the cost of each meter is more or less Tk 25,000. Titas Gas Company has arranged all these meters by taking the loan.

The sector is being coordinated by collecting monthly rent for the convenience of customers without taking the total price of the meter together. According to the recent decision of the government, the monthly rent of residential prepaid meters of all gas distribution companies under Petrobangla has been redefined to Tk 200 from January 2024.

The notification also said that for the convenience of customers, the government has pre-fixed the price of residential gas at only Tk 18 per cubic meter. But in 2023, the combined price of gas produced in the country and imported LNG is much higher than Tk 18 per cubic meter on average. That is, the government has to pay a subsidy against every cubic meter of gas in the residential sector. Therefore, the increase in gas prices in the residential sector is inevitable.
