State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu has provided reassurance to the public regarding the potential shortage of sugar following the fire incident at the S Alam warehouse in Chattogram. He affirmed that discussions have been held with mill owners to ensure stable sugar prices at the mill gate until Ramadan.

Titu made these remarks during the launch of the TCB sales program at Colony Bazar Polytechnic grounds on Thursday, March 7.

He emphasized the government's commitment to maintaining market stability without resorting to police interventions, despite pressures from certain businessmen. Titu urged businesses to maintain normal product supply levels.

Titu highlighted the government's efforts to alleviate consumer hardships, including providing essential items to a million people monthly through TCB under the Prime Minister's directive. Digital cards are being distributed to TCB customers after verification. Additionally, the price of sugar has been reduced by Tk 30 to Tk 70 per unit to facilitate affordable Iftar meals during Ramadan.

To ease consumer burdens, TCB dealership shops will be established, with dealers and wholesalers enlisted from mills within the next three months. By serving products to these one million customers through TCB, significant market pressure is expected to be alleviated.

Bangladesh's annual sugar demand stands at approximately 20 lakh tonnes, while operational sugar mills can only produce 2.1 lakh tonnes. Consequently, the country relies on imports to fulfill 97% of its annual sugar requirements.
