Post-Eid Fallout: Essential Prices Surge

After Eid-ul-Fitr, there have been price adjustments in various essential commodities while some remain stable. The Commerce Ministry, following discussions with traders, has revised the prices of edible oils. Bottled soybean oil now costs Tk 167 per 1-liter bottle and Tk 818 per 5-liter bottle, with loose soybean oil priced at Tk 149 per liter. Additionally, palm oil is fixed at Tk 135 per liter. State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam explained that these adjustments were made as the VAT reduction expired.

In local markets like Malibagh, Rampura, and Karwan Bazar, there's been a noticeable increase in onion and garlic prices, with onions now priced at Tk 60-70 per kg and garlic at Tk 130-170 per kg. According to traders like Shafiqul Islam from Karwan Bazar, the limited post-Eid market opening and low supply contributed to these price hikes.

Potato prices surged by Tk 5 per kg to Tk 50-55 per kg after Eid, while imported ginger now costs up to Tk 240 per kg. Similarly, egg prices have increased by Tk 10 per dozen, with brown eggs priced at Tk 125-130 and white eggs at Tk 115-120 per dozen.

However, meat and fish prices have remained relatively stable, except for a Tk 10 increase per kg in chicken prices, which are now sold at Tk 230-240 per kg for broiler chicken and Tk 340-350 per kg for Sonali chickens. Beef continues to be sold at Tk 800 per kg.
