Garlic, Ginger Prices Surge After Eid

After the holy Eid-ul-Fitr, though the onion market remained stable, but the prices of ginger and garlic increased. The price of local garlic is supposed to be the lowest at this time of the year but in the last week, its price has gone up to tk 20 per kg. And most of the ginger comes from outside the country. 

It is reported that the price of ginger fluctuates based on the value of the dollar. Local and imported ginger prices in the market have increased by Tk 10 to Tk 50 per kg in the last year.

According to the market price list of the government agency Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) yesterday, local ginger is being sold at Tk 300 to Tk 350 per kg in the market. A week ago it was 280 to 300 taka. Within a week, the price of local ginger has increased by Tk 20 to Tk 50 per kg. However, imported ginger is more common in the market, and is being sold for Tk 200 to Tk 260. A week ago it was 190 to 240 taka. That is, the price of imported ginger has increased by Tk 10 to Tk 20 per kg.

Due to the high production cost many people think that the price of local garlic is high. 

According to TCB data, local garlic is being sold at Tk 150 to Tk 180 per kg in the market. A week ago it was 130 to 170 taka. The price of garlic increased by Tk 10 to Tk 20 per kg in a week. At this time last year, local garlic was sold for Tk 100 to Tk 120. However, there has been no major change in the price of imported garlic in the last week. The price of imported garlic is now Tk 200 to Tk 220 per kg.

Meanwhile wholesale traders of ginger and garlic say that the price of local garlic was quite low even before Eid. But then the local garlic was raw. Over time, garlic loses weight due to drying. The price is increasing. And the prices of imported ginger and garlic have increased slightly compared to last year due to higher dollar market prices.
